The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job
The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Fed usually studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.
The figure of jobs created to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.
Private Data Indicate Continued Decline
Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Shows Moderate Rise
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that indicated that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
